Sponsored by Soroptimist Intl of Oceanside-Carlsbad, this curation of woman directed narrative and nonfiction shorts tackles a multitude of pertinent topics ranging from environmental sustainability, preservation of history, to the vast need for inclusion on a global scale. Proceeds from this event go toward Soroptimist Intl’s Live Your Dream Scholarship Awards with the goal to provide $40,000 in scholarship grants to assist talented and underserved women and girls as they overcome incredible challenges to realize their dreams.

The first film in Esselen language. A discussion with a pelican on the shore who is announcing the funeral dance of its kelp forest to a Ohlone Costanoan Esselen Nation woman. This project illustrates communication and collaboration possible between living species. Plants, animals and human beings, all inhabitants of the Earth, together, all in search of our survival in the Anthropocene, a time where 90% of kelp forest of California has disappeared , together aware of our interdependent existence.

Down on the Blues Alley in Holly Springs, Mississippi, you might meet David “Fox” Caldwell, the beloved owner of Aikei Pro’s Record Shop. Established in 1960 and a landmark on the Blues Trail, his shop was the hang-out for great Hill Country Blues artists like Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside — earning a place in blues magazines all over the world. Amidst waves of change and pressure from other business owners in town to close up shop, Mr. Caldwell, lovingly dubbed the “Father of the Alley,” keeps the dream alive, against all odds.

In Figment we follow artist Lieke Anna (35). Born and raised in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. She has a very good relationship with her mother, Jeanine. On June 19, 2020, disaster struck mother Jeanine when she suffered a severe cerebral hemorrhage while Lieke was sitting next to her on the couch. What follows are anxious and uncertain weeks of operations and complications. For a long time it stays unclear whether and how Jeanine will wake up. Slowly and painfully it becomes clear that the self-confident and independent woman she used to be has turned into a needy and dependent woman. FIGMENT is a film about the impact of brain injury on loved ones and about living loss.
